Before we move forward talking about hoop house plans, there is good in talking about what a hoop house really is. Structurally speaking, a hoop house is constructed using a series of bows (referred to as hoops) covered in a layer of material. The hoops can be made of wood, plastic pipe, or even metal while the layer is of heavy greenhouse plastic. Strips of wire, metal, or wood are used to fasten the plastic layer to the baseboards, which is stretched tight. The hoop house is a construction used to grow food regardless of the season in the year. The climate within the house is controlled naturally; it is heated by the sun while the wind cools it down.
Used to build the house, hoop house plans typically cost a builder anywhere from a hundred dollar to a couple thousand dollar. An owner of a hoop house may expect production of extra four to six weeks in both spring and fall. Even in winter, you can still grow foods using additional inner cover inside and sticking with a variety of cold-resistant plants. Inside the hoop house, you can plant things such as spinach or lettuce during wintertime. Late fall and during the winter see a decrease in temperature and sunlight, which means you should not rely on root crops such as carrots around this time.
Interestingly, hoop house plans can be used to build a space not only for cold-resistant crops but also the heat-tolerant varieties. The plastic layer can be removed first before covering half of the frame with shade cloth. Mini sprinklers can be added to irrigate and cool the plants. Overhead sprinklers can also be chosen instead. Plans of hoop house can be found on websites out there complete with lists of material required in constructing it.
